Flashback – Kingsized/Elvis Death Day 2000

In the mid- to late-90’s I started photographing bands around Atlanta using black and white 3200 film with no flash. The results are high contrast, grainy, and look terrible on a computer monitor. But rather than leave them in a box, ignored, I’m dredging them out and scanning them. When possible I’ll find my old reviews from these shows and tack them on. Enjoy!

It being the anniversary of the death of The King, and a couple of days after the Elvis spectacular that the Kingsized show has grown into at Variety Playhouse, I figured I’d flash back to the humble origins of the affair. No, not all the way back to Tupelo, but back to The Star Bar where the Kingsized Elvis shows began. This was not the first of those events, but it’s the first one I could find photos for. I’m not 100% sure these photos go with this ezine, but you get the idea.

EAR PLUGS
KingsizedSaturday we hit the Star Bar early enough to get in the door and awaited the ceremonial return of the King. Once I was lost, not a fan of the King, but the holy temple that is the Star Bar made a convert out of me and now I see the light.

KingsizedAmy and the El Vangelical Choir kicked things off with some fine Elvis from all eras.

After an intermission the big reverend Mike Geier led Kingsized into a rousing round of Aloha-era Vegas lounge era Elvis with his fantastic voice.
KingsizedThe horns were dead-on all night, despite one of the members having to arrive on crutches after an emergency visit to the hospital that morning, but such is the power of the King.

The backup singers were a pair of angels and the rest of the band performed with zealous glee. And though the place was hotter than a south Georgia church on a Sunday afternoon with no A/C, the throng shook, rattled and rolled with His holy presence.
